Tip: Shoot in the “Golden Hour”

If you’re a landscape photographer, this is an indispensable tip: Shoot in the “Golden Hour”.

Singapore. Fullerton Hotel view from Esplanade.

You can use the same camera, the same equipment, and even be at the same spot. But you can never get the same 2 picture.

Why? Golden Hours are unpredictable, and requires lots of patience and luck. You just need to be at the right time and the right place. In Singapore, the clouds are always unpredictable due to our all-year rainy season.

Ken Rockwell always reminded us that tools only helps make the job easier. This shot doesn’t test my equipment, but rather test my ability to see light. Shoot your subjects in the right light, and you’ll get the right shot.

The shot above, picturing the skyline of Singapore’s busiest town, is one iconic view. But in any “normal” light, this place doesn’t look fantastic.

Learn your equipment and make it work for you. Never work for your camera.

I hope you learnt something today!

Good luck!
